Target Population
|
According to NRS Beginning ABE Literacy Benchmarks for reading, the learner entering ABE Reading Level 1 has no or minimal reading skills and has little or no comprehension of how print corresponds to spoken language. The learner may recognize, read and write letters and numbers, but has a limited understanding of connected prose and may need frequent re-reading. The learner has little or no ability to read basic signs or maps. |

Level 1 Reading (Grade equivalent 0 - 2.9) emphasizes reading simple material on familiar subjects and comprehending simple compound sentences in single or linked paragraphs containing a familiar vocabulary. Learners who successfully complete Level 1 Reading achieve Beginning Basic Education Benchmarks according to NRS guidelines. |

Level 3 Reading (grade equivalent 5.0 to 6.9) emphasizes reading text on familiar subjects or from which new vocabulary can be determined by context. Learners read simple descriptions and narratives and can make some minimal inferences about familiar texts and compare and contrast information from texts. Learners read authentic materials on familiar topics such as simple employee handbooks. Learners who successfully complete Level 3 Reading achieve High Intermediate Basic Education Benchmarks according to NRS guidelines. |

Target Population

According to NRS High Intermediate Basic Education Benchmarks for Reading, the learner entering ABE Reading Level 4 can read text on familiar subjects or from which new vocabulary can be determined by context. Learners can read simple descriptions and narratives and can make some minimal inferences about familiar texts and compare and contrast information from texts. Learners can read authentic materials on familiar topics such as simple employee handbooks.

Target Population
|
According to NRS High Adult Secondary Education Benchmarks for Reading, the learner entering ABE Reading Level 6 can read a variety of literary works including primary source materials and professional journals. Learners explain and analyze information, use context cues and higher order processes to interpret meaning of written material, and read technical information and complex manuals.

Description
|
Level 6 Reading (grade equivalent 11.0-12.9) emphasizes adapting strategies and skills to a variety of reading tasks and becoming a critical reader. Learners apply prior experience and knowledge, use study skills, and transfer reading and vocabulary skills to a variety of printed and illustrative materials found in the workplace, school, and everyday life. Learners who successfully complete Level 6 Reading achieve a reading level comparable to the Wisconsin 12th grade exit standards for reading and are prepared to enter post-secondary education and/or obtain and maintain employment. |
